Pool decks

Pool deck resurfacing and coating

A pool deck has to be safe with bare wet feet on it, comfortable in full sun, and able to shrug off chlorine and salt. It also has to survive a New England winter under a foot of snow.

Shoreline flake blend, a common pick for pool decks

Why pool decks fail early

Pool decks get the worst combination of exposure on any residential property. Constant wetting and drying, pool chemicals, sunscreen, and then months of freeze and thaw with snow sitting on the surface.

Most decks we look at have surface scaling around the coping and cracks radiating from the corners. Both are cosmetic until water starts getting underneath, and then they are not.

  • Surface scalingThe top of the slab lifting away, usually worst nearest the water
  • Chlorine attackUntreated concrete slowly breaks down at the surface
  • Heat underfootDark, dense surfaces get uncomfortable in direct sun
  • Slip riskThe one failure mode with real consequences

Colour choice matters more here

On a pool deck the blend is a comfort decision as much as a design one. Lighter blends stay noticeably cooler in direct sun, which matters when people are walking on it barefoot in August.

Every blend we carry can be seen on the flake colors page, and we bring physical samples to the quote so you can put them down on your own deck before deciding.

Questions we get about this one.

Can you coat right up to the coping?

Yes. We mask the coping and the tile line and finish the coating cleanly against it.

How long before the pool can be used again?

Foot traffic the same evening, normal use in 24 to 48 hours. We do not need the pool drained.

What if the deck has settled?

Settlement is a base problem, not a surface problem. A coating over a settled slab will look better and still be uneven. We will say so at the quote rather than take the job.
